The Harriette Austin Writers Conference was created to honor Harriette Austin, a teacher who, with patience and kindness and very good advice, has made it possible for hundreds of people in Athens to experience the joy of writing. In 1993 a group of her students -- Charles Connor, a faculty member in UGA's College of Education, Beverly Connor, author of the Lindsay Chamberlain Mystery series and the Diane Fallon Mystery series, and Alice Gay -- formed a small publishing company, Quick Brown Fox Publishers, Inc., which cosponsored the first conferences with the Georgia Center. In 1999 the conference was integrated into the College of Education of The University of Georgia. Following Dr. Connor's retirement from UGA, a new group of Harriette's students is building a new conference on Dr. Connor's foundation, always keeping in mind Harriette's basic principles: Writing is worthwhile, all writers should be respected, harm no animals in any story read aloud, and no knitting in class.

The 15th Harriette Austin Writers Conference will be presented at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education on the University of Georgia campus July 18 & 19, 2008.
